Today computers have huge hard disks. A humongous hard disk not only improves one’s ability to store large amount of data, on the flip side, it also increases vulnerabilty to data loss, in case of hard disk damage.
To help a pC user in such situation, we have a Ginnie, a Ginnie called ‘Data Recovery software’.Some years back i suspected the ability of these Data Recovery softwares in satisfactorily recovering the data. But the perception changed when a friend got into data loss situation, and used one of the Data Recovery softwares available in the market. And to his utter surprise he was able to recover cent percent of his data.
So Data Recovery softwares do work.
So I searched for good Data Recovery softwares and found a list of some good ones, which I discussed with some friends for further authentication, so here is the list, to read click on the link:
the good softwares to recover a disk(Hard-disk)+ some best ones from different perspectives?
Which is the best software to recover a disk(Hard-disk)?
May 4, 2008 by PCSmasherDoes a non-functioning UPS bad for the Hard disk?
May 4, 2008 by PCSmasher“My UPS is not functionaing properly, it is not giving any back up and my computer gets off as soon as the power fails. Is it bad for my hard disk?…”
The above situation is a headache for any PC user. So what should one do when in a similar dilemma? The answer is simple,
A non-backup providing UPS means a UPS with an exhausted battery. So it is time to change your UPS . Sometimes it is suggested that, rather than going for a new UPS, a battery change is the right thing to do. But from all these years of personal experience, i think nothing but a new UPS will solve the problem.
There are strong behind this, which can be discussed some other day.
Hard disks develop bad sectors due to sudden breakage in power supply. So it is very possible that, if your system is turning off , as the electric supply breaks, your hard disk may develop bad sectors.
Apart from that sudden physical jerks, owing to poor handling and transportation also damages a hard disk.
So by the time a new UPS is arranged, one should use his or her PC without the UPS and should make sure to work in those hours of the day, when there is a dependable power supply.
One more thing if power fluctuates a lot in one’s home or place of work, a voltage stabilizer, meant for a refrigerator or computer, should be used.
Does Limewire make a computer really slow?
May 3, 2008 by PCSmasherI have used three file sharing programs–Limewire, BearShare and Kazaa. Free versions of all the three. From my personal experience i found Limewire to be least intrusive. Apart from that it offers more user control. And under ideal circumstances there is least background bandwidth use by Limewire. So under ideal circumstances ,I found no speed related problems, when ever i used Limewire.
Add to the above one important fact–I never use an anti-virus in my PC, and depend solely on the two utilities provided by Windows Operating Systems–System Restore and Firewall.
So if somebody says a fully updated anti-virus is a must in a PC, whenever someone plans to go for programs like Limewire, my suggestion is, although this piece of advice looks weighty, you can afford to ignore it.
The above verdict is about ideal circumstances. Now let’s discuss some exceptional or abnormal circumstances. It happens when the PC does get a virus or malware infection. under these circumstances, the computer does slow down. As the bandwidth is secretly used by some spyware.
A PC can get infection by two ways: one through the executable content downloaded through Limewire and; second through the malware either strategically placed by Limewire itself or by parasites that secretly attach themselves to Limewire, and earn at its cost.
Let I explain you the former way: Like other File sharing programs which profit from bandwidth usage(more uploads and downloads), Limewire also tries to increase its volume, no matter what the methods are. Remember there is no sage in the world of file sharing. The only difference being–some adopt comparatively more ethical methods than others.
An example will make the talk more simple. Some of you, who have been using Limewire for some time, will be aware that no search. however rare it may be, shows zero results–where in all probabilty, it is possible not to find the desired search. Why? ….because, even in such cases, Limewire shows four or five files which although have nothing in common with the search, are eponymous(having the same name)with the search text. Initailly not knowing this juggulary, the user downloads one of these files, and later finds that they are just band width occupying methods(or in simple, not the data the user wanted).
But this is case only for non exe data like movies and music files, where the above juggulary costs the user some time and sometimes money. But when such files are exes, then the loss is double, first on the above count and then on opening them, they infect the PC with some malicious stuff, which makes the Limewire occupy the bandwidth, without the knowledge of the user.
The parasites which profit on Limewire, work similarly, but they harm the user much more.
So whenever someone installs programs like Limewire, one should have firewall on and a restore point made before the installation. Second thing that should be remembered while using file sharing programs, is that– if a search shows only four or five results and that also having the same name as the search text entered by the user, better not to download it.As in all probability, it may be nothing but some smart move by the File sharing program or in simple some juggulary.
Even if after taking all the precautions, the PC gets infected, without wandering here and there, try to restore it to the restore point made before the Limewire installation. If this measure fails to contain the problem, make a proper backup of your important data in the primary drive and format it.

What does quarantine mean in context to Virus management?
April 29, 2008 by PCSmasherViruses in real world are the most resilient creatures. A virus can survive under extreme conditions. if a living organism gets infected by a virus, it has to live rest of its life with the virus. The only thing one can do is to make the virus less active or more better make it freeze(in the same position).
Now, viruses that infect our PCs are also very robust, but here we can’t make them less active, we can ether freeze them(motionless) or destry them. The freezing thing can be called quarantine.
The problem with the other method, that of destruction is that, as viruses attach themselves to exes or important system files, virus destruction means, the destruction of the file which acts as its host. So in severe form of virus attack, one is left with no option, but to FORMAT, the drive which contains the Operating system.
Is there a way of sharing data online?
April 29, 2008 by PCSmasherHave you heard about P2P(Peer to Peer) file sharing Program. If no, then you can use one such Program. The only condition is you have to share some data on your own computer with the network. One such progam is:
In all probability you will find what you desire.Although it is always advisable to buy the stuff one needs, but programs like Limewire are very effective at file sharin, where one can get anything from softwares to movies to songs and so on.
Where can I find good Macromedia Freehand help?
April 29, 2008 by PCSmasherThere is absolutely no need to wander here and there or spend money buying a book, unless you find it hard to read from a computer screen. All the macromedia softwares have very good tutorials and help sections, which can easily be found under the help menu. They are very systematic and very comprehensive.
Apart from that, joining some related community, groups and reading blogs is also a good idea. The only demerit in doing so is that, people in such places are not very different from real world, so most of the times good tips are not shared very openly.
How can i convert Torrent files to mpeg or avi formats?
April 29, 2008 by PCSmasher I think you have misunderstood the torrent file with the actual data file. You may be thinking that the small files which by default have been downloaded on your desktop are the actual data files, which just need to be converted into a suitable format. Further, you may be assuming that once a suitable converter software is found, and the files are converteed, the small files on your desktop will swell up and you will get a file of size 600 mb.
Actually Torrent files(the small files on your desktop) are just the links which will help you download the actual data.In simple words they are only the roads through which actual data will travel.
So click on the small files and move on for the onward journey.
Remember, a file of 600 mb, say a movie or anything else, when downloaded on to a PC will always show the size of 600 mb, when the download is complete, and not a file of 350 kb or else.
How can i cut an MP3 song and then rejoin it?
April 29, 2008 by PCSmasherGo for FileCutter. i have used it few years ago, when i needed the mp3 song ‘You sang to me’ by mark Antony. my friend cut the song and brought the pieces in three or four floppies, he also brought the File cutter software in one of the floppies as well, so that I can join the cut pieces when I put the song in my hard disk. So the software is very small and effective.Just search for the phrase ‘download file cutter’, in all probability, it’ll be a freeware.
That apart, numerous other softwares like Total Video Converter, no. one video converter etc, also have utilities in them to perform the task you desire. To get these either buy thee or use, programs like limewire.
Hope that this info is of some help to you
Dump your anti-virus now
April 29, 2008 by PCSmasherI’ve been without anti-virus software from the past three and half years. During this period I’ve regularly surfed the net and have least trouble. If you can believe, the past three and half years were much more comfortable than the time, when I used to ensure the presence of anti-virus software on my PC.
So “Is there any need to have anti-virus software installed in one’s computer, especially if the person visits the net regularly?”
For me the answer is a big NO!
Why? Because I’ve parted ways with the anti-virus utilities about three years ago and to this day I’m having no problems with this arrangement.
First of all let I tell you the reasons why I discarded anti-virus softwares. The reasons are:
i) As per research about fifty new viruses come in the world daily, while the anti-virus companies manage to develop anti-virus definitions for only four of these. Thus forty-six of the viruses still go unbeatable. So what is the use of installing something, which blocks four and is ineffective for the remaining forty-six.
ii) Although skeptics spread the dangers of venturing in the cyber space unprotected, they when asked, fail to answer a simple question
“Why do computers in world’s most secure places get infected, when they afford to have the best protection against viruses?”
The Answer is simple no anti-virus is secure.
iii) It seemed to me (this is just my observation) that if viruses do attack PCs, then there are more chances of getting one’s computer infected, if it is protected. It has more to do with the working of the entire anti-virus industry than with anything else. To understand this, let’s assume a working model:
“Viruses are made by anti-virus companies (not all but a few), these companies also make their anti-dotes or virus definitions. The motives behind such a working are: to make new customers and retain the old ones. The old customers or the ones that already have the company software are retained by giving them the virus definitions that are developed by the company against the viruses made by the same company. The new customers are made by infecting those PCs that use an anti-virus from the rival company.”
Look, this model is actually working!
So based on the working model put above, the whole business runs on two ideas:
1} Making a question and then answering it. (To retain the old customers)
2} Attacking the machines with software from the rival (to make new customers) Both these methods make the exercise easy.
So what is the use of keeping an anti-virus?
iv) If a person wishes to un-install an anti-virus of a certain company and then wishes to install another one from another company, he or she has to face all sorts of troubles in removing the former. Even downloading an anti-virus from the rival company via internet becomes an impossible task, as the former one blocks the copying of some crucial files of the new one.
So every time a PC owner wishes to install new anti-virus software, he or she is left with no option but to format the master drive.
What a waste of time and money.
v) Last but not the least, I found FIREWALL- an inbuilt security in Windows operating systems more effective than any anti-virus software.
